I don’t know. Smoothness of expression? Good mental exercise? It just bothers me, though it’s not a new issue. When I was in college, a professor made a comment to the effect of, “You’ve obviously never met an em-dash you didn’t like.” He liked my writing overall, but I took that bit as a challenge.
A challenge I’m still losing 15 years later, it would appear.
Very funny. Actually, I don’t think my problem is quite that bad…or even of that variety. I’m just not all the good at putting my asides into my main train of thought very well. When I actually have to give a speech, I–well, actually, you know because you’ve seen. I’m not big on patter.
